Can I add George Orwell In Defence of English Cooking http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/014102237X/026-7484568-2607661?v=glance&n=266239. It's a good example of great writing about the everyday.

I mentioned this on your planning blog but a field trip to the Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford is to be recommended. It's an Ethnographic Museum that has collected everyday objects from around the world. You can see whole cabinets full of combs that show a remarkable different in design and material used but they are still recognisable as combs.

The best bit is you enter the museum through a small door at the back of the natural history museum so you feel as if you've stumbled across a lost world.
